Huang Cun is a small, agriculturally based village of approximately 400 people in Xiuning County of the Huangshan Prefecture, traditionally known as Huizhou. The region is renowned for scenic destinations of the Huangshan and Qiyunshan mountains, as well as the lively villages filled with well-preserved and still-inhabited Ming and Qing homes and shrines built by wealthy merchants and officials of previous centuries.
Today, villagers in this remote region still plow their rice paddies with water buffaloes, pick and sort their tea by hand, and live in the traditional residences built by their ancestors. The Village China Experience allows visitors to share and learn from these local and ancient lifestyles, and to help preserve their rich cultural traditions. The Village China Experience works hand in hand with the Village China Project which assists Huang Cun residents in developing their hometown into a model community that both preserves rich architectural, cultural and agricultural traditions and maintains a financially and environmentally sustainable community.
